He stared at the offending golden retriever, Buster, as the dog effortlessly slipped under the fence. He felt a familiar heat rising in his neck, a flush of anger directed squarely at himself. He hadn’t thought ahead. He had procrastinated. Now, here was the consequence. The consequences of everything he failed to take care of.

He’d always been this way, putting things off until the last minute, and now, it seemed, the world was reminding him of it. The dog’s innocent joy felt like a direct indictment of his poor judgement.

He felt the prickle of tears in his eyes.

He imagined the criticism he was sure to receive. He deserved it, he thought.
