The flickering light cast strange shadows, making Mark’s face seem to shift and morph. He’d been trying to be helpful, offering Brenda his jacket. She’d politely declined. He knew he'd messed up the presentation. He'd winged it. He’d been ill prepared. He hated that feeling, the one where he knew he could have done better, if he had just tried harder.

He pulled at his collar, feeling a suffocating heat. He replayed the meeting in his head, mentally rewriting every sentence, correcting every mistake. He felt a profound sense of inadequacy.

He needed to fix it. He needed to be better.
