Gemotions

The musty scent of the solicitor's office seemed to cling to Amelia, a familiar companion to her own anxieties. Her brother, Thomas, beamed, already anticipating the windfall. She, however, hunched deeper into the uncomfortable chair, each creak of the leather a judgement of her perceived inadequacies.

The solicitor cleared his throat, adjusting his spectacles. "For Thomas, a thriving vineyard in Tuscany." The words hung in the air, rich and promising. Thomas practically vibrated with excitement.

Amelia’s stomach twisted. She, the artist, received a dilapidated cottage in a remote Scottish village, a place where the wind howled and the paint would inevitably peel. The solicitor continued, detailing the vineyard's value, the annual profits. Amelia pictured herself, alone in the cold Scottish cottage, the silence a stark echo of her own perceived failures.

She forced a smile, murmuring congratulations to Thomas. He was already making plans, a future that seemed to gleam in the Tuscan sun. The cottage, she knew, would be another testament to her perceived worthlessness. Her hands were clammy, a physical manifestation of her own self-doubt.
