The letter arrived on a Tuesday, crisp and official-looking. Clara ripped it open, her hands shaking. It was a DNA test result, confirming what she already suspected. A half-brother. She stared at the paper, the words blurring, the ink smelling like betrayal.

She immediately started cleaning the already immaculate kitchen. Scrubbing the countertops, polishing the sink until it gleamed, a frenzied energy coursing through her. The silence of the house was punctuated only by the rhythmic scrape of the sponge.

Her mind raced. She replayed conversations with her father, scrutinizing every word, every gesture. Had he known? Had he lied? Had she been so blind? Doubt consumed her. She found herself picking at the skin around her nails, a nervous habit she thought she had conquered years ago. She had always felt that she failed to meet her parents' expectations.
