"You were too slow, I'm afraid," the editor had said, his voice flat. Her graphic novel, a project she had worked on for years, was finally finished.

She had received an invitation to a comic convention. She went to the artist's alley, her heart pounding. She saw a table with a graphic novel. The art style, the characters, the story, were disturbingly familiar.

She felt a hollowness in her chest. She stared at the copy, almost unable to breathe. It was as if her entire project had been ripped out of her. She left the convention, her shoulders slumped, wanting to scream.
