Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the agitated drumming in Arthur's chest. He stared out, watching Mrs. Gable, his neighbor, load groceries into a car that wasn’t the beat-up sedan he'd always known. It was a gleaming silver Porsche. Arthur felt a familiar knot tighten in his stomach. He’d been worrying about his dented Volvo, the one he couldn’t afford to fix.

He found himself scrutinizing his own stained sweater as he walked back inside. The scent of burnt toast filled the air, a testament to his distraction this morning. He scraped the charred remains into the bin, the clatter amplifying the silence of his small apartment. The thought of Mrs. Gable’s life, filled with the effortless grace of luxury, felt like a deliberate taunt.

Later, he avoided her at the community meeting. He saw her smile and chat with the other residents, her expensive handbag casually resting on her lap. Arthur, instead, hunched in his chair, fiddling with the frayed edges of his notebook, making a conscious effort to look busy and inconspicuous. He left early, the damp chill of the evening seeping into his bones, a feeling that went much deeper than just the weather.
