“Who the hell are these from?” she muttered, scowling at the carnations. They were cheerful, yes, but also… cheap. She hated their boldness, their unsubtle cheer. She hated the space they took up on her otherwise tidy desk.

She spent the afternoon trying to dissect the meaning of the gesture, which was probably nothing more than a coincidence or a mistake. She checked her work emails, replaying recent conversations. Had she been too bossy? Not bossy enough?

Her jaw clenched. She knew she was difficult to work with. She couldn’t keep a steady pace. She was probably the reason the team failed their project. She glared at the flowers.
