He saw himself as a man who cared for his family, but in the book, he was a cold, distant figure. He felt the familiar weight settle in his gut, the feeling that he was perpetually disappointing.

He watched Sarah's face as she tried to explain, her words bouncing off him like bullets. The carefully chosen words of her novel’s depiction had cut deeper than any argument they’d ever had. He felt small, insignificant. He turned and walked away, needing air.
