The paper crackled under Chloe’s grip. It was Mark’s bucket list, discovered tucked within his wallet. “Build a treehouse,” was the first entry. She had to swallow, noticing how carefully he had made the letters.

She traced her fingers over the faded ink. It seemed she had forgotten what it was like to make things with her hands. She was usually glued to a screen. The air around her suddenly felt heavy.

She pictured her own accomplishments – a promotion, a new car – and a profound dissatisfaction settled within her. She put the list down and went outside to tend to her neglected garden.
