Gemotions

Daniel read the notice twice, then three times. He felt his face flush. He was always on the losing end of things. He should have known this was coming. He never saw these things coming.

He scanned the small space. The apartment, a testament to his perceived shortcomings, offered him no comfort. The mismatched furniture, the peeling wallpaper, the overflowing ashtray – all seemed to judge him. The rent was cheap, and that should have been a warning. He was used to being the bargain.

He sighed, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. He glanced at the stacks of unread books, the piles of laundry, the unopened bills on the table. He was going to fail at this. He could feel it. He should have been smarter, more on top of things.

He went to the window and stared out at the street. He didn't want the next chapter. He was afraid. He closed his eyes.
