"Look, Grandma!" Little Finn held up a drawing. The figure, drawn in thick black crayon, was undeniably the same as the guardian his grandmother had mentioned: the one named Shadow. Sarah, her eyes glistening, struggled to keep her voice even. This past month had been a whirlwind of bad news. The drawings were a lot to take in.

She felt a hollowness in her stomach, a feeling of being exposed and vulnerable. She remembered the comfort Shadow had offered her, the safety he had provided. Now, seeing him again, brought about an uncomfortable situation.

She blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision. She needed a moment. She went to the window, staring blankly at the garden as the sun dipped below the horizon, feeling incredibly hollow.
