The relentless clatter of the city, the horns, the shouting, the endless parade of faces – all of it had become an unbearable cacophony. She felt the tears welling again. She was exhausted.

The pawn shop offered a momentary respite, a quiet haven, but even here, the weight of the world pressed down on her. Every object in the shop seemed imbued with a forgotten sorrow, with tales of loss and regret.

She began to examine the rings. The light was harsh, the air thick with the smell of dust and despair. It was then, when her eyes had nearly given up hope, that she saw the ring. The intricate band, the way the diamond caught the light – it was undeniable. Her grandmother's. She felt a wave of nausea sweep over her.
