The envelope, cream-colored and official-looking, had landed on the kitchen table amidst bills and flyers. Sarah had stared at it all morning, a knot forming in her stomach. Now, she finally slit it open.

The terse letter confirmed her worst fear. She flinched, as if slapped. The room seemed to tilt slightly. She felt a wave of nausea, a bitter taste rising in her throat.

She crumpled the letter in her hand. Her nails dug into her palm. She needed to be alone. Grabbing her coat, she left the house without a word, heading into the empty park.
