The afternoon sun felt like a spotlight on Amelia's back as she confronted Mr. Davies. She stood rigidly, her shoulders drawn up, trying to appear taller than she actually was. "Are you absolutely certain this is necessary?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly.

Mr. Davies just shrugged, his expression bland. "It's for security, mostly."

Amelia felt a flush creep up her neck. She hated conflict, any sort of confrontation. She had cherished the relaxed intimacy with her neighbor, the occasional shared cup of coffee. She hated the idea of a boundary where a gentle connection had existed.

"It just... changes things," she mumbled, unable to meet his gaze. The words felt inadequate, hollow. The looming fence seemed to foreshadow a significant loss.
