The coach's words hung in the air, a thick, suffocating fog. "We need you to transition to goalie, Maya." Maya blinked, her chest feeling tight, as if a hand had squeezed the air from her lungs. She’d spent her life perfecting her midfield game. Every run, every pass, every goal was a testament to her dedication. Now, all that seemed to crumble before her.

Her palms began to sweat. The polished hardwood floor of the gym suddenly felt cold against her cleats. She wanted to say something, anything, but the words caught in her throat. She could only nod, a jerky, involuntary movement.

The other girls on the team were chatting around her, but their voices sounded distant. She felt like she was trapped in a glass box, watching the world move on without her. All the years of training, the sacrifices, the dreams… did they mean nothing? She swallowed hard, tasting the metallic tang of unshed tears.
