“We’re thinking you should try the long jump, Sarah,” the track coach said, his voice brimming with optimism. Sarah's jaw tightened. She had always excelled in the sprints, a testament to her explosive speed. The long jump, with its technical demands, felt like a betrayal of her strengths.

The sun beat down on the track, the heat intensifying the feeling of unease that had settled in her chest. She found herself picking at a loose thread on her shorts, a nervous tic. The other athletes, already practicing their jumps, seemed to mock her.

She excused herself to the water fountain, gulping down the cool liquid, but it did little to quell the turmoil within. She felt adrift, lost, like a ship without a rudder.
