The coffee cup trembled in Leo’s hands, lukewarm liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. He had seen Maya’s face light up when she spoke about the job interview; the way she'd excitedly described her preparation. He, on the other hand, had found the whole process…draining.

The fluorescent lights of the cafe seemed to hum with an oppressive energy. Every laugh, every conversation, every clinking of ceramic on the table was a tiny, unwelcome jab. He felt exposed, fragile.

Maya breezed in, a whirlwind of energy. "They loved me!" she exclaimed, beaming. Leo managed a weak smile, the muscles in his face aching. He felt like he had aged a decade in that single moment.

"That's great," he mumbled, his voice catching slightly. He found himself wishing he could disappear. He needed to be alone.
