The rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the frantic drumming in her chest. Sarah stood in the doorway, watching David in the living room. His voice, usually a comforting baritone, was now lowered, conspiratorial. She couldn't hear the words, only the undertone of… something.

She retreated to the bedroom, her legs feeling unsteady. The floral wallpaper swam before her eyes. Each time she'd walked into their bedroom, she'd loved the way the pattern danced. Now, the patterns were mocking her.

David's footsteps approached, the rhythm uneven. She closed her eyes, feigning sleep. He leaned down, his kiss light, too quick. Then he was gone, and she was left alone with the rising tide of unease.
