The talent show. She’d avoided attending for years. But her daughter, Amy, was performing, and she couldn't miss it. Mrs. Sterling, her old music teacher, was at the piano. The past suddenly invaded the present.

As Mrs. Sterling began to play, she closed her eyes, trying to block out the memories. The music, the smell of the auditorium, the lights—everything transported her back. She gripped the seat tightly.
