The attic felt colder now, as if the chill of the afternoon was seeping in. Mark found a handwritten letter he'd written to his first crush. It was filled with clumsy declarations and tortured metaphors. He felt a sudden, sharp sting in his chest.

He was a man now, successful in his career, always striving to appear strong and capable. But this… this vulnerable, hopeful boy... He didn’t want to be reminded of those clumsy beginnings. He felt almost ill, a wave of nausea washing over him.

He crumpled the letter in his fist, a desperate urge to erase the memory rising within him. He wanted to scream.
