The sheer volume of it was staggering. Lisa, who usually enjoyed order and structure, felt a sense of panic rising in her chest. Her mother had kept everything: the bad grades, the embarrassing poems, the self-portraits that revealed every insecurity.

She felt like she was trapped in a glass box, all her flaws on display. Her heartbeat quickened. She started to fidget, unable to stand still. This was too much.

She wanted to run, to hide. She slammed the lid on the box, the sharp click of the latch making her jump. She turned and fled the room.
