Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the staccato rhythm in Amelia's chest. She hugged the fleece blanket tighter, a small, involuntary movement. A text message, the words now blurring through unshed tears, confirmed it: the party was off. She’d been so looking forward to it, the carefully planned decorations, the guest list, the chance to feel… cherished. Now, the carefully constructed fantasy of the evening dissolved, leaving behind a hollow ache.

She pushed herself off the couch, her legs heavy. The apartment, usually a haven, felt vast and empty. The scent of lavender, usually comforting, felt cloying. She wandered into the kitchen, the light harsh against her skin.

She opened the fridge, peered inside, then slammed it shut. Nothing appealed. The weight in her chest intensified, a leaden presence. She just wanted to disappear.
