Gemotions

The elevator ride felt interminably long. Michael found himself staring at his reflection in the mirrored doors, scrutinizing his face for any telltale signs of weakness. He'd learned the truth about Chloe's salary earlier that day. She was so young, so inexperienced, and, apparently, so highly valued. He, on the other hand, was now apparently considered expendable.

His hands were clammy. He wiped them on his trousers as he stepped out of the elevator. The office felt colder than usual. He saw Chloe chatting animatedly with the boss. A sharp pain lanced through his chest, and he took a deep, shaky breath. He felt a wave of nausea wash over him. He needed to get away, to be alone. He took a shortcut to the fire escape and took a long drag of the cold air.
