The drive home was a blur. Karen barely registered the traffic, the stoplights, or the other cars on the road. All she could think about was the information she'd overheard at the company Christmas party. Alex, the intern, was already making more than she was. She felt a sting behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to tears.

The steering wheel felt cold and unfamiliar under her hands. She gripped it tightly, knuckles white. Reaching her driveway, she slammed the car door with more force than necessary. The air was frigid. As she walked to the house, the wind whipped her hair across her face, as if mocking her.
