The flickering light of the fireplace cast dancing shadows on the walls as Chloe listened to Daniel read aloud. He was trying to read a passage from her favorite novel. The words, however, were halting and unfamiliar. She'd known this novel since she was a child. He was trying his best, she could tell.

He paused, looking up, waiting for her approval. It was then she noticed how the shadows had lengthened. A chill ran through her.

She had always protected this part of herself, this connection to her past. It was hers alone. Now, it felt… violated. She stood up abruptly. "I… I need some tea," she said, her voice thin, and hurried to the kitchen. The kitchen, where she could be alone.
