The attic door groaned open, a rusty protest against the intrusion. Sunlight sliced through the dust motes, illuminating a jumble of forgotten things. Martha, normally a picture of calm efficiency, felt a strange pressure in her chest, a tightening that made her breath catch. She'd told herself this house was a fresh start, a clean slate. But the first box she opened, brittle photographs spilling out like fallen leaves, sent a tremor through her.

The faces in the photos – strangers, yet somehow familiar – seemed to watch her. A young woman with a laughing mouth, a stern-faced man in a suit, children with missing teeth. Martha’s fingers trembled as she touched the faded paper, her stomach twisting. She quickly slammed the lid shut, a whimper escaping her lips.

A wave of dizziness washed over her. She gripped the edge of the box to steady herself, the rough wood digging into her palm. "Just leave it," she muttered to herself, the words barely audible. "Just... leave it." The attic suddenly felt suffocating, the air thick with unspoken memories.
