He’d spent the afternoon meticulously preparing, wanting everything to be perfect. The small apartment, usually a haven, felt suffocating. He nervously straightened a framed photo on the mantelpiece, again.

The knock on the door, instead of excitement, was a wave of dread. He opened it, his smile faltering. The woman on his doorstep was a familiar face, a woman he cared for. But standing behind her was another woman.

The world seemed to spin. He felt his face grow hot, and he was struggling to maintain eye contact. The photo on the mantelpiece suddenly seemed mocking. He felt a pressing need to apologize. He failed.
