The radio blared from the kitchen, a cheerful jingle advertising a new line of spices. The jingle then transitioned into the sound of a food critic describing the "perfect blend" of spices used in a new line of tacos. Liam immediately recognised the blend – the secret ingredient he spent years perfecting for his family, now being marketed under another name.

He switched off the radio abruptly, the silence amplifying the thudding in his chest. His hands clenched into fists. He felt trapped, his breath coming in shallow gasps.

He closed his eyes and leaned against the counter, suddenly exhausted. He pictured his grandfather, who had taught him everything. Now, everything felt lost.
