A sense of being watched clung to Noah, as palpable as a physical weight. His journal, the one with the leather clasp, sat open on the table, its private thoughts laid bare. He had written about his anxieties about his exams. His roommate, Ben, was sitting at the computer, whistling a familiar tune.

Noah felt his face grow hot. His hands fidgeted, picking at the loose threads on his jeans. He felt a strong urge to get away, to disappear.

He grabbed his keys and rushed out of the door, muttering a hasty goodbye that went unheard.
