He had entered the kitchen, his face flushed with excitement. “Look what I found, Martha! Gramps’ old pocket watch!” Her brother held the timepiece aloft, the gold glinting in the afternoon sun. He continued, "Think what it's worth! We could finally afford that new roof."

She retreated, her back hitting the cold tiles of the kitchen wall. Her throat felt constricted, like a hand was clamped around it. The watch, a symbol of her grandfather's steady presence, now felt like a weight, a heavy thing that would be bartered away.

"It meant so much to him," she mumbled, her voice catching. She stared at the worn, leather-bound cookbook on the counter, its familiar pages suddenly a world away. He didn't seem to notice her distress, his eyes already calculating the potential profit.
