The chipped mug trembled in Leo's hands. Rain lashed against the window, mirroring the storm brewing inside him. Across the cramped kitchen, Mark was cheerfully scrolling through adoption websites, a golden retriever puppy flashing across the screen. "Imagine, Leo! Walks in the park, slobbery kisses, endless fun!"

Leo took a large gulp of his tea, the scalding liquid doing little to soothe the knot in his stomach. “I, uh, I’m not sure. We have a small apartment.” He hated the way his voice wavered, like a child’s.

Mark waved a dismissive hand. "Nonsense! We can make it work. Besides, a dog's good for you. Keeps you active." He added with a grin, "And maybe helps you chill out." Leo quickly turned and busied himself with the washing up, avoiding eye contact. The warmth of the water was suddenly too hot, too constricting.
