He picked at the loose threads on the sofa cushion, the silence between him and Ben awkward and heavy. Ben had just finished outlining his plans for a bearded dragon. The image of the lizard, with its spiky scales, was already making him want to retreat.

“It’s the perfect pet, Mark! They just sit there, eat bugs, and look cool. Plus, it’ll be a great conversation starter!” Ben's tone was full of enthusiasm.

Mark could barely look at him. His throat felt tight. "I… I don't know if that's a good idea." He felt a wash of heat, his face turning red. The cheerful chatter of the city outside the window seemed to mock his feelings. He stood abruptly and walked towards the kitchen, giving Ben an excuse about needing a drink.
