The email from Marcus arrived just as I was putting the finishing touches on the decorations. He had the audacity to write, "Can't wait to see you at MY party!" My hands started shaking. My own party, the one I had meticulously planned, felt insignificant, diminished.

I reread his message, the careless words a physical blow. The cheerful font seemed to mock my own insecurities. I ripped the streamers from the wall, the paper tearing easily in my frustrated grip.

I kicked a stray balloon across the room, the sound a small explosion of anger in the quiet apartment. My throat ached with unshed tears. I just wanted to disappear.
