The silence in the art gallery was deafening. Emily stood frozen, her gaze locked on the painting. She'd spent hours with Jake, sketching under the old oak tree in her backyard, the same tree now visible outside the gallery window. He'd been exhibiting his work, a significant accomplishment. When she’d introduced herself, his brow furrowed, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. No recognition. Just a polite nod and a vague smile.
