The vibrant energy of the crowded market felt overwhelming to Freya. She'd spotted Chloe, weaving through the stalls. They’d been inseparable as children, collecting seashells, making mud pies, and vowing to always be there for each other. When Freya had approached her and spoken, a blankness washed over Chloe’s face. She looked at Freya as if she were a total stranger, not a childhood friend. Freya found she couldn't meet her eyes.
