The silence in Liam’s small cottage felt amplified, filled with the echo of his dashed hopes. The email from "Starlight Press" remained on his computer screen, the words of rejection a stark and unrelenting reality. He felt a deep, almost physical, ache in his back.

He forced himself to take a deep breath, trying to regain some semblance of composure. He got up from his chair, and mechanically began to tidy the already immaculate living room. Each movement was deliberate, each surface wiped and polished with a desperate, almost obsessive, energy.

His hands shook as he set his tea cup on the table. He stood by the window, staring out at the rain-streaked glass. The world outside seemed just as bleak as he felt inside.
