He adjusted his tie, the knot suddenly feeling too tight. The air in the ballroom seemed thin, making it difficult to breathe. His father, seated beside his mother, seemed to radiate a quiet contentment. He felt a stab of something akin to jealousy.

He’d avoided this for weeks, the planning, the anticipation. Now, faced with the reality of it, a wave of nausea washed over him. He felt exposed, vulnerable. His childhood memories, usually filed away, resurfaced, sharp and vivid.

He began the speech, his voice barely a whisper. He talked about his father's dedication, his unwavering commitment. But the words felt hollow, inadequate. He longed to be back in his car, driving, anything but here. He quickly retreated to his table.
