The old box, crammed with forgotten trinkets, yielded a treasure of a different sort. David picked up the letter, addressed to his deceased wife. He re-read the words, meant to be an apology, a desperate attempt to mend their fractured relationship. He felt the sting of regret, a bitterness that coated his tongue.

He was aware of a hollowness that seemed to expand within his chest. The letter revealed his deepest failures, his inadequacies. The room seemed to grow cold as the weight of his past bore down upon him. He carefully folded the paper and set it aside, unable to fully process the words.
