“Did you hear?” The words were whispered, like a secret, but the implication hit Emily like a punch to the gut. She had been diligently organizing files, her mind occupied, until then. Now, everything went cold.

She felt a sudden chill, despite the warm air circulating through the vents. Her breath hitched in her throat, her chest tight. She leaned back in her chair, the leather squeaking softly. She felt the tears welling up in her eyes, threatening to spill over.

Her fingers trembled as she reached for a tissue, her movements jerky and awkward. She fought the urge to break down, to give in to the overwhelming tide of worry. She swallowed hard, trying to regain control, to compose herself.
