The concert hall felt like a gilded cage. Amelia fidgeted in her seat, the symphony's grandeur lost on her. The silence between movements was unbearable, punctuated only by the scrape of chairs and the occasional cough. She wanted to text her mother, needing a moment of connection, a lifeline. The message, meant to convey her loneliness, read, "I hate being here. I just want to go home." She tapped the wrong name and it went to her estranged grandmother, a woman she hadn't spoken to in years.

She felt a jolt, as though her body had been electrified. Her breath caught in her throat, making her feel as if she was suffocating in the elaborate space. Her palms were damp, and her vision began to swim. She bit her lip until it bled, a futile attempt to ground herself.
