He stared at the blank screen, the cursor blinking, mocking him. The words wouldn’t come. Peter, the new head of marketing. It tasted like ash. He was alone in his office, and the silence was deafening.

He pressed his fingers against his temples, trying to ward off the throbbing in his head. The air around him seemed to crackle with unspoken disappointment. He pulled out his phone and scrolled endlessly.

The emails were piling up in his inbox. He considered turning off his computer, going home. He wanted to escape, to be somewhere, anywhere, where the news didn't exist.
