Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the relentless drumming in Eleanor's chest. The stark white envelope lay on the kitchen counter, its crisp edges seeming to cut into her vision. She felt a tremor run through her, a wave of nausea building in her stomach. The words swam before her eyes: *Eviction Notice*. Her hand trembled as she reached for it, her fingers brushing the cold, slick paper.

The scent of stale coffee hung heavy in the air. She’d made a fresh pot an hour ago, but the aroma no longer seemed to offer comfort. Instead, the smell clawed at her, a reminder of the time that was slipping away. She leaned against the counter, suddenly needing the support, feeling as though the room might tip and spill her onto the floor.
