"No, no, no," whispered David, the paper trembling in his hand. The bright yellow walls of his apartment seemed to press in on him, the cheerful color suddenly mocking his distress. He sank onto the floor, the cold tile a shock against his skin.

He felt a familiar ache behind his eyes, a precursor to tears. He pressed his palms to his face, trying to stop them. He wanted to scream, to shatter something. The world felt like it was spinning out of control.

He drew a shaky breath, trying to steady himself. Everything he owned was in that apartment, all his memories, all his small comforts. The thought of losing it was a physical agony.
