“Did you see?” Mark’s voice was a booming intrusion, even through the closed door. A frantic, almost pleading tone. He’d never sounded like this before.

The crash had already set his teeth on edge, a jarring sound that echoed in his skull. Now, his neighbor's distress felt like an added weight. He pulled the door open, a half-formed apology already on his tongue.

Mark’s face was pale. The usual boisterous cheer that animated him was completely gone. His eyes were wide and slightly unfocused. He gestured towards the fallen tree, his hand shaking. "It…it was so majestic," he mumbled, his voice cracking.

He wanted to offer comfort, but his own throat felt tight, as if a physical barrier had appeared. Instead, he just nodded slowly, his own stomach churning in response to Mark's obvious upset.
