“Well, that’s that,” James muttered to himself, the words catching in his throat. He’d known, of course, that his parents would eventually sell. But seeing the listing, the professional staging, the shiny new appliances… it felt like a betrayal.

He stood up abruptly, unable to remain seated. He began to walk around his apartment, fiddling with objects. He felt a sharp pang in his chest, as if a physical weight had been added. He needed to get away, to escape the suffocating weight of this information.

He grabbed his coat and keys, the simple act of leaving a desperate attempt to break free from the invisible chains that held him captive.
