The realtor’s words hung in the air: “Unfortunate incident.” But the implication was clear: This house, her sanctuary, had been a place of suffering. He’d always loved the way the sunlight streamed through the windows, but now the light seemed to carry a weight.

He found himself wandering through the house, his steps slow and deliberate. He touched the walls, the furniture, the objects that had filled his life with a sense of security. Each contact seemed to prickle his skin.

He felt the sudden, overwhelming urge to run, to escape the confines of the house and the darkness that now clung to it. He needed air, needed distance.
