The paper crackled in her trembling hands, the red ink a harsh splash against the pale blue. A 'C-'. Her stomach twisted, a cold knot forming in her gut. She’d spent weeks on this project, sacrificing sleep, missing social gatherings. All for a grade that felt like a slap in the face.

She crumpled the paper, the edges digging into her palms. A wave of heat washed over her, making her cheeks flush. The library, normally a sanctuary of calm, suddenly felt stifling, the air thick with judgment. Tears pricked at her eyes, blurring the spines of the books.

Her friend, Liam, approached, a cheerful smile on his face. "Hey, Maya! How'd the essay go?" She could only shake her head, the lump in her throat making speech impossible. He looked confused, then concerned. She turned and fled, the sound of his questioning voice echoing in her ears.
