The email landed with a thud, a digital brick in Elias's inbox. He stared at the subject line – "Important Announcement Regarding University Restructuring" – and felt a tremor begin in his chest, a rapid, uneven drumming. He swiveled away from his desk, the cheap plastic chair squeaking in protest. He couldn't quite bring himself to click on it.
