David felt a profound sense of disorientation. The familiar landmarks of campus, the ivy-covered buildings, the bustling walkways, all suddenly seemed to shift. They were changing, becoming something else, something…temporary. He had built his world here, nurtured it with his dreams and ambitions.

He sat on the steps of the administration building, watching students milling about, their conversations animated with worry and anger. He felt disconnected, observing them through a thick pane of glass. He clutched his backpack, his knuckles white.

He wanted to scream at someone, at something, but the words caught in his throat. Instead, he took a deep, ragged breath, the cold air stinging his lungs. He was going to lose everything, his future, the time he had been given. He closed his eyes.
