Rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the chaotic drumming in Sarah’s head. She’d been enjoying a quiet afternoon, curled up with a book, when the phone rang. It was Mr. Henderson, asking if he could come over to discuss something. Now, standing on her porch, he said, "I think we should take the old birch down".

She felt a hollowness in her chest. Every part of her body was suddenly stiff. She struggled to maintain a calm facade, to appear composed.
